Aging is an inevitable part of life. Many of us yearn for the spark of youth within us, so it can be disheartening when our inner zest isn’t reflected on our faces.

The eyes are what create uniqueness and add depth to the face, and patients want others to focus on this area,” explains Dr. Dayan. “Unfortunately, it is also the first part of the face to reveal any issues or problems.”

Blepharoplasty Surgery in Chicago

Patients at Impressions in Chicago who choose eyelid surgery or eye lifts are constantly concerned about the stressed and tired look that appears around the eyes. Through advanced eyelid surgery, Dr. Steven Dayan creates a natural-looking result that makes patients look more youthful, refreshed, and rested. While a Blepharoplasty is usually done on its own, some patients choose to combine this procedure with others such as brow lifts, injectables, and facelifts.

What Is a Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, often referred to as eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and reduce bagginess from both the upper and lower eyelids, resulting in a more youthful, alert, and relaxed appearance. As we age, many individuals notice the development of fine wrinkles on the lateral eyelid skin, commonly known as crow’s feet, which can appear as early as the late twenties.

Certain families may have a hereditary predisposition to aging eyelids, characterized by excess upper eyelid skin and pronounced bags beneath the eyes. These hereditary traits can manifest as early as the late teens to early twenties. For those considering facial rejuvenation procedures like facelifts, it's also worth evaluating the eyelids, as combining treatments may offer a more harmonious rejuvenation.

Types of Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is performed on the upper and/or lower eyelids, depending on the individual needs of the patient. Our body contouring experts will customize the process based on the goals of the patients. The surgery is generally performed as an outpatient procedure and usually lasts between one and three hours.

+

Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty

This procedure involves making incisions in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. It aims to remove sagging skin and reduce puffiness. Besides cosmetic enhancements, it can also be beneficial for those whose vision is obstructed due to excessive eyelid skin.
+

Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty

For the lower eyelid, incisions are made along the eyelid's crease or beneath the lashes. Most often there are no external incisions, as the bulging fat pads can be accessed through tiny incisions inside the eyelid. This procedure is ideal for reducing the appearance of under-eye bags and wrinkles.

What to Expect for Your Blepharoplasty

We want you to feel fully informed on everything you can expect throughout your blepharoplasty. From the moment you pick up the phone, our team is here to support you.

Your Blepharoplasty Consultation

Your initial consultation is a crucial step on your journey to considering blepharoplasty. During this appointment, Dr. Dayan will conduct a thorough examination of your eyes and discuss both your medical history and aesthetic goals. To ensure that blepharoplasty is the best fit for you, specialized eye tests may be ordered. Your perspective and input are paramount to us, and we're here to address any questions or concerns you might have.

How to Prepare for Your Blepharoplasty

Optimal preparation is the foundation for achieving the best outcomes. While we will provide you with personalized guidance tailored to your individual needs, here are some general recommendations such as quitting smoking, avoiding medications (we will provide a comprehensive list during your consultation), and arrange for transportation on the day of your procedure.

During Your Blepharoplasty Procedure

The day you’ve been waiting for, your moment of renewal.

Eyelid surgery is performed in an outpatient surgery center. General anesthesia or a combination of local anesthesia and sedation is most often used. As we administer an anesthetic, relaxation and peace will settle in. Dr. Dayan will begin the blepharoplasty by making tiny incisions along the fold of your eyelid, allowing him to perform the modifications needed to bring perfection. A testament to Dr. Dayan’s work, your scars will be completely concealed once he’s stitched up the incisions.

Blepharoplasty Aftercare & Recovery Timeline

We are continuously dedicated to giving our patients the attention they deserve during their period of recovery. Our blepharoplasty patients will receive a blepharoplasty recovery care package as part of their experience with Impressions. It is important that we make your blepharoplasty recovery time as comfortable as possible.

Undergoing blepharoplasty is a significant decision, and understanding the recovery process is crucial to ensure optimal results. Here's what you can expect post-surgery:

  • Immediate Recovery: After your eyelid surgery, although rare you may experience bruising and swelling. These symptoms are most noticeable for the first seven to ten days. While many patients feel well enough to return to work within a few days, the physical signs of surgery might prompt some to take a longer break but rarely more than 7 days. Makeup can be a helpful tool to conceal any discoloration 10 days after surgery.
  • Activity Level: While returning to work and light activities might be feasible within a few days, it's advisable to refrain from more strenuous activities for at least 2 weeks to ensure proper healing and minimize potential complications.
  • Stitch Removal: Stitches from the procedure are typically removed within three to seven days post-surgery. It's essential to follow your surgeon's guidance on care during this period to ensure the incisions heal well and leave minimal scarring.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Blepharoplasty?

If you are 18 years old or older, in good general health, and committed to getting surgery, there is no specific age range that is most acceptable for eyelid surgery. Nevertheless, most of our patients consider this procedure to look more youthful, meaning they are in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. In some cases, younger or older individuals benefit from this treatment if signs of aging or skin laxity become a concern. Your special features and the desired result will allow us to identify the ideal facial improvement method for you.

What are the benefits of blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty rejuvenates your appearance by minimizing wrinkles, eliminating under-eye bags, and tightening and refining the facial contours around the eyes. For those with excess skin hindering their vision, this procedure can also enhance visual clarity. Beyond the physical transformation, the renewed appearance often leads to a boost in confidence and self-esteem, offering individuals a refreshed outlook on life.

Blepharoplasty can improve many aspects of your life, including:

Your comfort is our priority. Whether you’re asleep with a general anesthetic or awake with local anesthetic and sedation, we’ll ensure you are pain-free throughout the entire process.
What are the risks of a blepharoplasty?
We’re dedicated to ensuring your safety and minimizing risks. Following your blepharoplasty, you may temporarily experience side effects including watery eyes, sensitivity to light, puffy eyelids, and minor discomfort. While exceedingly rare, it’s possible to develop bleeding behind the eye, infection, vision changes, and the need for revision surgery.
How long do blepharoplasty results last?
Blepharoplasty rejuvenates the eyelids, creating a more youthful-looking appearance with results that last a long time. That said, this surgery doesn’t stop the natural aging process. Patients benefit from our results for many years, depending on environmental factors and genetic influences. To maintain your results, we suggest taking good maintenance of your skin, staying away from harsh sunlight without protection, and considering non-surgical cosmetic enhancements that will help preserve your results in the future. Constant check-ins with our specialists will ensure that your new and improved appearance stays that way.
