What Is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition characterized by redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes the development of small bumps or pustules on the face. Rosacea can vary in severity but typically affects the central part of the face. Besides the appearance of inflamed skin, rosacea can be accompanied by a burning sensation, flushing, and if left untreated, can progress into more severe symptoms.

While the exact cause of rosacea is not fully understood, a combination of environmental and genetic factors seem to contribute to its development. At Impressions Face + Body, we offer a variety of treatment options to manage the impact of rosacea on your quality of life.

What causes rosacea?

Rosacea is a complex skin condition with a multifaceted origin. Genetic predisposition, abnormal blood vessel function, inflammation, and potential triggers such as certain foods or sun exposure contribute to rosacea. While its exact cause remains elusive, effective management often includes recognizing and avoiding personal triggers and alleviating symptoms and flare-ups through personalized treatment strategies.

Laser Treatments

High-energy light beams have emerged as a valuable solution for managing rosacea. Lasers target the underlying blood vessels, effectively reducing redness and flushing, while improving overall skin texture. Among the most common laser therapies is intense pulsed light (IPL), available at our clinic, which effectively eliminates underlying skin irregularities.

Rosacea treatment is considered to be virtually painless. Minimal discomfort occurs with laser treatment, but our experienced specialists ensure you’re comfortable throughout the procedure.
How long do rosacea treatment results last?
Our laser treatments bring fast, impressive results, but in the case of rosacea need to be repeated. Most of my patients go through a series of treatments – usually three separated by one month each – before experiencing extended relief for periods as long as a year.
How Does IPL Help Rosacea?

Intense Pulsed Light works by flashing an intense spectrum of light onto your skin. When treating rosacea, the light is absorbed by the targeted blood vessels, thereby destroying the vessel and reducing redness.

A 2011 study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information

(NCBI) tested 102 patients with Rosacea and the effect of the Intense Pulsed Light treatment. Patients, who held a variety of rosacea cases from mild to severe, were treated several times between a 1-3 week interval. Of the patients who received the IPL, 80% saw a reduction of redness and 78% improved skin texture and reduced flushing. As well, 72% reported milder and fewer acneiform breakouts. This was a great step for people with rosacea. The study concluded that "The use of IPL at specified parameters provides optimal therapy for the treatment of rosacea."
