BB Creams

Suddenly, we are hearing heightened buzz about BB (beauty balm, blemish balm, blemish base) creams. However, BB Creams are not a new product.  They have actually been around since the late 1950s when dermatologist Dr. Christine Schrammek formulated it to protect the skin after in-office medical procedures.  These creams are used widely in Asia, and they are starting to gain popularity globally.

WHAT DO BB CREAM DO?

BB creams offer multiple of benefits, but their original, basic premise is that they can be used for camouflage and protection. This cream is a combination of moisturizer, primer, foundation and protector all in one easy to use product.  Similar to foundation, it provides a nice “canvas” for the skin, minimizing the appearance of pores and wrinkles. The majority of BB creams available have UV-protection properties; this is perfect for those that wish to simplify their skincare routine.

HOW DO THEY WORK?

The majority of BB creams available contain sunscreens including titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Silicones are also commonly used due to their occlusive, protecting properties. The rest of the ingredients tend to differ per company ranging from anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory agents to anti-aging ingredients.

ARE THEY EFFECTIVE?

The majority of BB creams are extremely effective in evening the skin’s look by reducing the appearance of pores and fine lines. The sun protection properties built-in are effective for reducing further damage and protecting post-procedure.  As for the other claims, depending on the particular product more research should be done to determine full efficacy.
